Air Source heat pumps - the future of heating.

Future proofing your home with renewable energy

From 2025, New Build Houses Are No Longer Allowed to Use Fossil Fuel-Powered Heating

As the global push for sustainability intensifies, the UK is making a historic shift in its approach to heating homes. From 2025, new build houses are no longer permitted to install heating systems that rely on fossil fuels such as natural gas, oil, or coal. This decision is part of the UK's broader plan to reduce carbon emissions, move towards greener energy solutions, and ultimately meet its ambitious climate goals. By 2045, the government wants all homes in Scotland to have switched to zero-emissions heating systems. There has never been a better time to protect yourself from future gas price rises with an Air Source Heat Pump. Air source heat pumps are incredibly efficient, with the potential to produce 3-4 units of heat for every unit of electricity consumed. This makes them much more efficient than traditional gas or oil boilers, which typically convert only about 90-95% of their energy into heat. Air source heat pumps can drastically reduce your heating costs, particularly in well-insulated homes.

Air source heat pump Efficiency and Performance

Air Source Heat Pumps are 300-400% efficient

Air source heat pumps are known for their high efficiency and performance, providing 3-4 kWh of thermal energy for every 1 kWh of electricity used.  In simple words, for every £1 you put into the heat pump operation, the heat pump will produce £3-£4 worth of energy. This means it’s 300% to 400% efficient, far outperforming conventional gas boilers (which are about 90–95% efficient). This efficiency may vary depending on factors such as temperature, size, and model of the pump, but generally makes air source heat pumps an excellent choice for those seeking to reduce their energy consumption and want to go to a greener home heating supply.

By investing in an air-source heat pump, you’re choosing a central heating system solution that is both environmentally friendly and cost-effective.

Frequently Asked Questions

An air source heat pump (ASHP) works by extracting heat from the outside air and transferring it into a building to provide heating and hot water. Even in cold weather, the air still contains heat, and the heat pump can capture and use this energy efficiently.

  • Heat Absorption: The pump uses a fan to draw in outside air, even in freezing temperatures. The air passes over an evaporator coil filled with a refrigerant fluid.
  • Evaporation and Compression: The refrigerant in the coil absorbs the heat from the outside air and evaporates, turning into a gas. This gas is then compressed by a compressor, which increases its temperature significantly.
  • Heat Transfer: The hot gas is passed through a heat exchanger inside the building. The heat from the gas is transferred to a water or air distribution system (such as underfloor heating or radiators), warming the building.
  • Expansion and Cooling: Once the refrigerant has released its heat, it cools down and returns to a liquid state, passing through an expansion valve that lowers its pressure. The cycle repeats.
  • Hot Water Production: ASHPs can also heat water for use in bathrooms, kitchens, and heating systems. Some systems include a hot water tank to store the heated water for later use.

Air source heat pumps offer numerous benefits, including cost savings on energy bills, significant reductions in carbon emissions, and long-term sustainability. They provide a cleaner, greener alternative to traditional heating systems, and with the backing of government incentives, they are becoming increasingly accessible to homeowners. Whether for a new build or a retrofit project, ASHPs are an excellent choice for those looking to future-proof their homes, save money on energy, and contribute to a greener planet.

The installation of an air source heat pump (ASHP) typically takes 2 to 7 days, depending on several factors such as the complexity and size of the system, the type of property, and whether any additional work (e.g., upgrading the radiators) is required.

Yes, air source heat pumps (ASHPs) work all year round, including during the Winter months. They are designed to extract heat from the outside air even in freezing temperatures, which is one of the key advantages of this technology over other heating systems. Air source heat pumps can still capture heat from the air, even when the temperature drops below freezing. Modern ASHPs are designed to work efficiently in temperatures as low as -25°C Air source heat pumps work in the coldest corners of Scandinavia, where temperatures regularly drop well below freezing.

The cost of installing an air source heat pump (ASHP) in Scotland can vary depending on several factors, like the size of your home, heating system upgrades like larger radiators and your household heating needs. However, on average, the installation cost for an ASHP is typically around £6000 inclusive of the £7500 Grant funding available through the Home Energy Grant for Scotland.

You don’t always have to upgrade your radiators when installing an air source heat pump, but it’s often recommended to ensure the system operates efficiently.  The larger the radiator, the better it will perform with a heat pump. Heat pumps operate at lower temperatures compared to traditional boilers, and larger radiators dissipate heat more effectively at these lower temperatures. Underfloor heating works exseptionally well with air source heat pumps.

There is a misconception that air source heat pumps are very loud. Air source heat pumps are similar in sound to a microwave or dishwasher, meaning they are classed as low in sound and not disruptive. An air source heat pump is just as quiet, if not quieter than your gas boiler when it is working!
